Triggers and their origins and the psychological archaeology of understanding why specific situations produce specific reactions
Every significant emotional trigger has a history. The reaction does not arrive from nowhere — it was installed by a specific learning process, in a specific context, that paired the triggering situation with a significant emotional consequence. Understanding that history does not eliminate the trigger, but it changes the relationship to it from automatic response to observable pattern.
LeDoux’s fear conditioning: how triggers are installed
LeDoux’s (1996) foundational research on fear conditioning established the most precise neurological account of trigger formation available. The amygdala stores fear memories through associative conditioning — a process in which a neutral stimulus that is paired with an aversive experience becomes sufficient to activate the fear response on its own. The conditioning does not require conscious awareness: the association is stored at the level of the amygdala’s implicit memory system, which is faster than conscious processing and does not require the explicit memory of the original experience to fire.
This is why triggers are specific rather than generic. The entrepreneur who has a strong automatic reaction to a particular tone of critical feedback — not all critical feedback, but this specific tone — is not reacting to the general category of criticism. They are reacting to the cue that was associated with an aversive experience specific enough to have been encoded by the amygdala as dangerous. The specificity of the trigger is the specificity of the original association.
The conditioned response fires automatically when the cue is encountered, decades after the original conditioning, without the original aversive experience needing to be present. The investor’s email does not need to resemble the original formative experience consciously for the amygdala to register the pattern match and activate the response. The cue can be a tone, a phrase structure, a relational configuration, or a somatic context — any element that was present during the original conditioning and is present now.
Bowlby’s internal working models: why relational triggers have specific configurations
Bowlby’s (1973) internal working model framework provides the developmental account of why relational triggers are organised around specific configurations rather than distributed randomly across situations. The internal working models that attachment experience installs function as templates for interpreting and responding to subsequent situations that share structural features with the formative ones.
The founder whose trigger is authority-critical situations — board challenges to strategy, investor pressure on vision, senior team member disagreement — is not simply sensitive to criticism. They have an internal working model, installed through early relationships with critical authority figures, that is activated by the structural similarity between the current situation and the historical one. The model generates the expectation of the original relationship’s consequences — rejection, punishment, inadequacy — and the corresponding emotional response is triggered by the configuration before the current situation has been evaluated on its own terms.
This is why the trigger reaction is frequently disproportionate to the immediate situation: it is calibrated to the original formative relationship’s stakes, not to the current situation’s actual stakes. The investor’s critical question is genuinely important and worth taking seriously. It is not worth the full activation that the internal working model, calibrated to a historically more consequential critical relationship, produces. The disproportionality is the evidence of the template.
The somatic archaeology: tracing triggers backward through the body
Van der Kolk’s (2014) somatic psychology research established that unprocessed emotional experiences are stored in the body’s autonomic nervous system — not primarily in the narrative memory where cognitive reflection operates. The trigger’s origin is therefore accessible through the body rather than primarily through cognitive retrospection.
The somatic archaeology practice that Ogden, Minton and Pain’s (2006) sensorimotor approach developed involves tracking the trigger’s bodily expression backward: noticing where the physical reaction is located (the chest tightening, the stomach dropping, the shoulders pulling in), identifying what sensory experiences accompany it, attending to what age or life period the physical experience resembles, and identifying what historical situations share that somatic pattern.
This is not a retrospective intellectual analysis. It is a present-moment somatic enquiry that uses the body’s activation pattern as the primary data — because the trigger was installed at the level at which the body holds its threat responses, and the body is therefore a more direct access point than narrative reconstruction. The result is typically not a sudden recovered memory of a specific formative experience; it is a recognition of a somatic and relational pattern that connects the current reaction to a historical template.
The practical value of this recognition is not that it removes the trigger — conditioned responses do not dissolve through understanding alone. It is that it changes the relationship to the trigger from automatic reaction to observable pattern. The founder who recognises the investor criticism trigger as a conditioned response calibrated to a historically significant critical relationship can hold the current situation and the historical pattern simultaneously — which creates the gap between stimulus and response that choice requires.
The ACT defusion approach: creating the gap
Hayes’s ACT defusion practice provides the most practically accessible intervention for working with triggers at the moment they fire. Defusion is the practice of observing the triggered thought or emotion as a mental and somatic event rather than experiencing it as an accurate report on the current situation.
The defused relationship to a trigger looks like: “I notice the authority-challenge trigger is activated” rather than “This person is threatening my vision.” The first framing maintains the observing self’s perspective; the second is the fused perspective in which the trigger’s evaluation is experienced as the reality of the current situation. The practical difference is significant: from the first position, the founder can evaluate the investor’s challenge on its actual merits while also acknowledging the trigger’s activation; from the second, the trigger evaluation has displaced the actual evaluation.
The defusion does not require that the trigger be understood or resolved. It requires that the trigger be recognised as a trigger — a conditioned response pattern — rather than as the accurate reading of the immediate situation that the amygdala’s automatic processing presents it as.
The reappraisal timing implication
The Gross reappraisal research established in the previous article applies to triggers with a specific timing implication. Reappraisal is most effective when deployed early in the emotional response process — before amygdala activation is high. The trigger is the entry point where early reappraisal is possible, but only if the trigger is recognised before the activation has built. Recognising the trigger pattern — knowing which situations activate which conditioned responses — enables the early reappraisal that is unavailable without that recognition.
The founder who knows their authority-challenge trigger can install the reappraisal frame before the board meeting: this challenge is information worth evaluating, not a threat to be defended against. The reappraisal installed before the activation is high is far more effective than the same reappraisal attempted at the peak of the triggered response.
