Married participants received mild electric shocks while holding their spouse’s hand, a stranger’s hand, or no hand. The social support and cortisol buffering literature — established across this series through Cohen and Wills (1985), Heinrichs et al. (2003), and Ditzen et al. (2008) — provides the biological mechanism. High-quality close relationships provide emotional support that modulates cortisol reactivity during and after stressors. The low-quality-relationship entrepreneur’s cortisol response is longer and recovers more slowly — accumulating the allostatic load that produces burnout, cognitive impairment, and emotional dysregulation across the business lifecycle.

The isolation cost asymmetry

Coan and Sbarra’s (2015) social baseline synthesis documents a specific and practically significant asymmetry in the cost of emotional regulation under different social conditions. Humans who are socially isolated are working harder — consuming more glucose, generating more cortisol, and depleting more prefrontal resources — to achieve the same emotional regulatory outcomes that socially supported humans achieve at lower metabolic cost.

The isolated entrepreneur is paying a higher biological price per unit of emotional regulation than the well-supported entrepreneur. This asymmetry directly explains a pattern that is frequently attributed to personality differences: why some entrepreneurs seem to absorb business pressure without deteriorating while others show progressive emotional dysregulation across the same pressure exposure. The most direct evidence for the causal direction of the relationship quality-emotional regulation pathway comes from what happens when a high-quality relationship ends. Sbarra and Hazan’s research on emotional regulation following relationship dissolution documents measurable impairment in emotional regulation capacity following the end of a primary attachment relationship — through the loss of the co-regulatory resource the relationship provided.

The entrepreneur who goes through a separation or divorce during a demanding business period is not only experiencing the emotional distress of loss. They are simultaneously losing the neural co-regulatory resource that the relationship provided — the social baseline that was reducing their threat response and lowering the metabolic cost of their emotional regulation. The emotional regulation impairment that follows is a direct consequence of the social baseline disruption, not merely the emotional upset of the relationship ending. The business pressure that was manageable with the relationship in place becomes harder to manage without it, through exactly the mechanisms the social baseline theory predicts.
