The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women

Valerie Young

Why we recommend this book

The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women (No you don't have to be a woman to read this book :) by Valerie Young is the most comprehensive available account of the impostor phenomenon specifically, building directly on Clance and Imes's foundational research and extending it through Young's own decades of work with high-achieving populations. Young identifies five competence archetypes through which impostor experience is expressed: the perfectionist, the expert, the natural genius, the soloist, and the superwoman or superman, each of which represents a different configuration of the core belief and a different set of maintaining behaviours. Her account of the specific cognitive patterns through which impostor beliefs are maintained against contrary evidence, including the characteristic attributions that route successes away from genuine capability, is the most detailed available treatment of the self-verification and escalation mechanisms this article describes. For the entrepreneur who recognises the impostor experience in themselves and wants to understand its structure rather than simply be reassured that it is common, Young's book provides the most practically specific account available.
