The All-or-Nothing Marriage: How the Best Marriages Work

Why we recommend this book

The All-or-Nothing Marriage: How the Best Marriages Work by Eli Finkel. Finkel's research synthesis covers what the evidence establishes about why close relationships in the modern era are simultaneously more demanding and more potentially rewarding than they have been historically — and what happens to both partners when the investment required to sustain them is not made. His account of what he calls the suffocation model of marriage is directly relevant to the entrepreneurial context: the close relationship that is chronically deprioritised in favour of the venture gradually loses the relational investment that makes it a regulatory resource, and the breakdown that eventually follows removes the resource at exactly the point when the venture most depends on the entrepreneur's cognitive and biological capacity. For the entrepreneur who treats their outside-of-work relationships as the part of life that can absorb the residual time and energy after the business has taken its allocation, Finkel's research provides the evidence-based argument that this approach is commercially self-defeating as well as relationally corrosive.
