Mind Over Money: Overcoming the Money Disorders That Threaten Our Financial Health by Brad Klontz and Ted Klontz. The Klontzes’ research synthesis on money scripts — the deeply held, largely unconscious beliefs about money that form through early relational experience and shape adult financial behaviour — provides the most directly applicable available treatment of the mechanism through which close relationships transmit financial risk attitudes. Writing from their clinical research on the psychological roots of financial behaviour, the Klontzes document how the money scripts installed in childhood are continuously activated and reinforced by the close relationships of adult life — specifically the intimate partnership, whose financial attitudes either confirm and amplify the script or provide the corrective experience that can gradually revise it. For the entrepreneur who has noticed that their partner’s risk aversion is shaping their commercial decisions in ways that exceed what explicit conversation would predict, the Klontzes’ account of how money beliefs operate as unconscious scripts rather than deliberate positions explains the mechanism: the partner is not making a rational argument about risk that the entrepreneur is evaluating and finding persuasive. They are activating a relational script about what financial safety looks like that is operating below deliberate awareness in both of them. Their account of the specific work required to make the money script explicit and examinable — both individually and as a couple — gives the entrepreneur the intervention that the Bernasek and Shwiff mechanism predicts is necessary: not better negotiation about specific decisions, but the surfacing of the underlying financial belief system that the specific decisions are expressing.
