The Speed of Trust

M.R. Covey

Why we recommend this book

The Speed of Trust by Stephen M.R. Covey. Covey’s research-grounded account of the specific behaviours through which trust is built and the economic consequences of trust deficits at the team and organisational level provides the most directly applicable available treatment of what the micro-moment trust formation mechanisms the article covers look like as a daily leadership practice. His account of the thirteen behaviours most consistently associated with trust formation, including the small, repeated, consistent behaviours that the Lewicki developmental model and the Gottman bid-response research identify as the primary trust inputs, and of the specific ways that these behaviours build each of the three antecedent dimensions that the Mayer model requires, gives the founder who wants to understand what building trust actually looks like moment to moment the most research-grounded and most practically applicable available framework for doing so. His treatment of the specific trust-destroying behaviours that leaders most commonly deploy without awareness of their effect, and of the specific trust dividend that high-trust environments produce in the form of speed, efficiency, and reduced management overhead, is the most directly applicable available account of what the trust formation investment the article describes returns commercially.
